David colosi and Dave Hughes - On the wagon

1991 collaboration with Dave Hughes

MATERIALS: paperback copy of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, cassette tape, tape recorder, 12 pack of beer, and two bottles of scotch.

PROCESS: We began recording, drinking, and reading the book aloud.  As we read we “accidentally” spilled alcohol, drooled, urinated, spit, vomited and extinguished cigarettes on the book.  Only the first 11 chapters (90 pages) reveal our efforts and our progressive intoxication.  The last thing I remember is making an extremely dangerous and illegal drive to Carl's Junior for fuel (a burger) - mimicing Mickey Rourke's character in Barfly, "All I need is a little fuel, that's all I need to be better."

MOTIVATION: This was my contribution of the fusion of literature and drugs and alcohol that Kerouac, Bukowski, and the Beats made history with. The social image of the artist that they created became one I sought to emulate through this action.  If not for the book and the tape, I might have no memory of it. Dave may have a completely different motivation, memory, and interpretation. Or, since he doesn't have the cassette or the book, he may have no memory of it at all.
